Guarantee The Essentials

We are proud to be supporting the “Guarantee The Essentials” campaign with Trussell, calling on the UK Government to introduce an Essentials Guarantee. This would ensure that the basic rate of Universal Credit always covers life’s essentials – such as food, household bills, and travel costs. Right now, too many people are being pulled into hardship because the support they receive simply isn’t enough to meet even the most basic needs.

At the heart of this campaign is a simple but powerful message: no one should be going hungry or without essentials in a country like ours. Yet our research shows that 70% of people referred to food banks are receiving Universal Credit. That tells us the system is not doing what it should. By ensuring that Universal Credit always meets a minimum level to cover essentials, and that deductions like debt repayments never pull people below that line, we could lift 1.9 million people out of the risk of hunger this year – including 580,000 children. Without action, 425,000 people are expected to face serious hardship.

This is a vital moment to raise our voices. On Wednesday 18th June, we will be travelling to Westminster to meet with our MP and discuss this urgent issue. We’re aiming to show that people from all walks of life stand behind this campaign. If you would like to support the call for an Essentials Guarantee, please sign the open letter.
